Making those in need look better on the outside truly gives them confidence and a much stronger spirit on the inside. EVERY time I gave... I not only dished out my God given talent , heart , mind to this gracious group I myself walked away a better person. Wide eyes to all things big and small I have to be grateful for. I have met so many wonderful people through The Beyond Project ... not just the outstanding volunteers but those also showing up to met with us, talk with us and tell us their stories.. Rachel and her amazing conquest is a life changer ... for ALL those involved. Please talk a quick minute and read about THE BEYOND PROJECT... and hopefully it will inspire you as well...
Name:Rachel HileName of your business/organization:The Beyond ProjectWhat do you specialize in?Mobilizing beauty professional to nonprofits for volunteerism. How long have you been in business?4 YearsWhat made you want to do what you do?(What is your “why”)Since graduating from beauty school in 2006 my heart was always drawn to give back through using my gift as a hairstylist. I had always believed you give back, I was a big sister in college and also did tutoring for kids for after school programs. I would seek out opportunities to volunteer as a hairstylist and it felt difficult, I even did a makeover day with my salon with women from the YWCA and cut foster kids hair. It always fell short since I had no support. In December of 2013 my 2 year old nephew suddenly passed away, it shifted the trajectory of my life. I sat there, days, weeks and months following realizing how short life was and I needed to live out what was on my heart. I shared with my mom on Mother's Day, I have to do something. That night my friend Jessica Dahl called me and said, its time to do something. We co-founded The Beyond Project in 2015. She is left in 2017 to pursue what had been a dream of hers. With our board and volunteer team we continue to bridge the gap between the beauty professionals and the nonprofits in Seattle, Los Angeles, Chicago, and recently Austin. My why continues to be a little boy named Matthew who loved with no filter. I hope each and everyday The Beyond Project is an expression of love that only a child can give. It is pure and BEYOND what we can even understand.Where do you see yourself in Five years? Our goal is to have a chapter in cities across the country to create a space where volunteerism in the beauty industry comes with ease. Where nonprofits can reach out cause they have a client with a job interview the next day and we are there to provide services needed. We hope to connect beauty professionals to others in their community that are doing like minded work that it creates a cohesive bond that builds our community up.Tell me a story that sticks out in your mind that you encountered on the job ( can be funny, heart felt, mind blowing… whatever comes to mind)I was serving a women with hair and makeup services. When I got done I looked at her and said, "you are so beautiful." Tears began to well in her eyes as she spoke slowly, "no one has ever told me that." This women was in her 30s. She started hugging me and wouldn't let go. My heart sunk. I kept replaying it later that day. No one has ever told her she was beautiful? Realizing the power of what we do and say and praying she sees herself as just that from the outside in.If you didn’t do this, what would you do instead and why?
At this point travel the world, cause there are so many places I still want to see. |
